The topic of what is free in backgammon matches has been thoroughly discussed by a number of authors. Most notably (for me at least) by Danny Kleinman in "Vision Laughs At Counting With Advice To The Dicelorn", Volume 2, Pages 282-284.
So what is free?
There are free doubles, free passes, free takes, free gammons, and even free backgammons. I would refer anyone interested in more information to Danny Kleinman's article as he discusses them thoroughly
