Steve Sax of California is the 2002 American Backgammon Tour (ABT) Player of the Year!
The Chicago Point Newsletter officially announced Steve's title on their website after the last ABT event of the year took place, The Ace Point Club's Holiday Tournament, from December 27-29 in New York City. (Karen Davis won that event; results and photos are expected soon.)
Sax is a Feature Columnist on GammonVillage. It is the second consecutive year that one of our writers wins this title - Jakes Jacobs won it in 2001.
Steve, who has been devoted to the game for many years, accumulated a total of 37.21 points in the ABT standings throughout 2002. Ed Olaughlin was hot on his tail with 34.37 points while third place went to Chuck Bower with 27.00. Paul Klein and Doug Mayfield were fourth and fifth with 22.88 points. The entire list of the top 25 ABT players of 2002 can be seen at ChicagoPoint.com. An explanation of the American Backgammon Tour and how the points are calculated can be found on this page.
Steve Sax is the #20 Backgammon Giant of the world and was the Gammon Associates "Player of the Year" in 1999 and 2000. Steve also won the "Grand Crystal Beaver" at the Midwest Backgammon Championships in March 2000 defeating Nack Ballard, currently the #1 Giant of Backgammon, and won the Doubles event that same year at the Las Vegas Open with his partner Bob Glass
