The Best Way to Learn and Improve Your Backgammon Game

I am writing this article to share with you what I believe to be the best way to learn or improve your backgammon skills.

I have been giving lessons to beginner and intermediate players for about 20 years. I have found that the best way for my students to learn is to break the game down into single, specific areas of play, discuss then independently, and then practice just that area until they get it.

Thanks Phil, this is the best article I have read on how to improve one's game. Its practical and I have struggled to get my rating to move upwards over the last 4-5 years. I especially like the idea of taking a position and playing all possible rolls from that position. Sounds like a great way to learn and I can't wait to test it out.

Hello Phill,

It seems good ideas just keep spreading. I've been doing the same thing with my students since I first developed a course in 1991. Can't recall who I first got the idea from. But starting from set positions, and slight variations, certainly allows the student to get a handle on what's happening, and how the game is likely to pan out from each position.
