Backgammon's Psychological Traps

Awhile back, I wrote an article for GammonVillage about the benefits of backgammon. While many or even most players enjoy the game itself and gain from the experience in many ways, the game unfortunately also has a dark side. A wise friend from my college days once told me that even the best of things can also cause great harm, or as he put it, "Anything hot enough to warm you is also dangerous enough to blow up in your face." We will explore the dark and dangerous aspects of backgammon here, with the purpose of learning to avoid the tricks, sidestep the traps, and continue to enjoy the game and its many benefits.
