"Five more minutes to the New Year!" At parties, in restaurants, on crowded beaches or crowded squares, revelers eyed the clock, cleared their throats to roar in the New Year, or licked their lips if someone kissable was handy. Champagne was poured, fireworks were readied, bands played a little faster. That was elsewhere. Here, more exciting things were happening.
