Mary Hickey reports from the 2009 Carolina Invitational Backgammon Championships, held at the Hilton University Place in Charlotte, North Carolina, from January 16 to January 18, 2009.
Does anyone remember when winter was hibernation the season for backgammon tournament players? Backgammon players used to wake up for Pittsburgh in February, sort of like Punxsutawney Phil, the famous weather-predicting groundhog who also hails from Pennsylvania. But now there are three events to choose from. What is a backgammon addict to do?
First was New York City on January 8-11, and on the following weekend, January 16-18, the Carolina Invitational. Immediately following this event was Bill Davis' backgammon cruise, Jan. 18-25. But neither the difficulty of choosing, the worldwide financial crisis, nor bitterly cold weather seems to have affected attendance at this year's Carolina Invitational. Director Jeb Horton reports that there were seven more players this year than last, a total 89 (45 Open, 30 Advanced, and 14 Novices)
