On the 2nd weekend of January 2009, began the NY Metropolitan Backgammon Tournament held across the Hudson River from Manhattan in Jersey City, New Jersey. Temperatures outside were cold enough to turn the modest precipitation into light flurries but temperatures inside the spacious ballroom at the Hyatt Regency were plenty warm, especially when you consider the heat created by the intense competition between some of the best backgammon players in the United States.
Those players included last year's NY Metro Champion Mike Senkiewicz, this year's champion Victor Ashkenazi as well as Richard Munitz, Ed O'Laughlin, John O'Hagen, Petko Kostadinov and "Giant" number one "Falafel".
