Current Ladder: Championship Flight
GammonVillage correspondent Stick reports from Day 2 at the 2009 World Championships of Backgammon, being held at the Fairmont Hotel in Monte Carlo, Monaco from July 13 to July 19.
MONTE CARLO, Monaco - Day 3 and we're squeezing the original 173 down to some serious contenders. The biggest match in my opinion was the Mochizuki Masayuki v. Chris Yep match in the round of 32.

I say make the 2 point. We're playing for the gammon aren't we - especially at this score.

Re your and Neil's 52, an undoubled gammon is huge for you at this score, so making the 2-point is my play. Two off the mid leaves the same 4 shots but making the deuce gives the oppt 7 more dancing numbers.
The 33 play from the Yep-Mochy match is a tough one. The 2- cube gammon price is around .56 at this score so you can be a little more gammon hungry than normal. It looks to me like the big play costs Chris 5 additional losses, 1 of which is a gammon loss (3 rolls hit back right away and he rates to leave more flies on ensuing rolls or he might roll 44). Can hitting and covering win 10 additional gammons? Since you'll probably never make the 4-point, I doubt it. 7 or 8 looks more like it which gives him a net increase of 6 or 7 gammons. Plus Chris might have a play on after the safe play -- if Mochy rolls 33,21, or 11.
16-10 (2) for me.
another good one, thanks for the "first hand" info and for taking the time to get them out each day with picts.
