Mary Hickey reports on the 2009 American Backgammon Tour (ABT) Wisconsin State Backgammon Championships, held from September 4 through September 7, 2009 in Madison, Wisconsin.
Labor Day Weekend has always been the season for Swiss—not the cheese, but the tournament format that pairs winners versus winners and losers versus losers until the field has narrowed to a small enough number of winners to hold a playoff for the prizes. Those who have lost three times need not fear, there is a Consolation event for them, and so nobody is out of action till they have lost four matches total. No other ABT format guarantees that many matches to every player!

Great tournament report Mary - Thanks! And congratulations on your run in the Championship. I always like your tournament reports - good writing with a large number of excellent pictures - great job!

Great report, but you left out the MOST important win of the tournament. Scott Casty and I bought two teams in the Calcutta and ended up owning the winner, second place, and 1st consolation (Tak, you, and John O'Hagan). Also, in your extensive reporting of tournament results, you failed to mention that I won a match.
Hi Phil,
Yes it was exciting that you won a match, though standing on your head in the aisle and yodeling might be considered excessive celebration by some of our more serious readers. I'm sure you'll agree my picture of you at the end, watching with evident fascination as Neil throws dice through a baffle box, gives the viewer an impression of you having a lot more gravitas. Though it's possible, of course, that they'll conclude instead that you have no life!
