Sean Garber

Steve Sax reports on the 2010 American Backgammon Tour (ABT) Pittsburgh Backgammon Championships, held from February 19 through February 21, 2010 in Moon Township, Pennsylvania.

Sean Garber of Indianapolis, Indiana found his way into three finals during the weekend of February 19-21, 2010, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He won the doubles, came in 2nd in the Masters jackpot and finished 2nd to Gary Fries in the 2010 Pittsburgh Backgammon Championship's Open Division. His doubles partner was none other than Indiana's Chuck Bower who rolled a decisive set of doubles during a four cube in the finals against the team of Philadelphia's Brent Cohen, and New York expert Richard Munitz. Semi-finalists in the doubles were La Jolla's Jon Vietor (of "Vietor Cup" fame) and partner Greg Merriman from Michigan and on the other side of the draw Michael Safaryan partnered with Mike Nazorovitch also made the semis.

Thanks for sharing the details, Steve. For those of us who did not make it to Pittsburgh this year, it makes it more real (especially with the pictures).

See you Wednesday at our regular Gammon Associates' weekly,

Thanks for the article Steve.

Kudos to Rob Maier and staff for another excellent Pittsburgh tournament.

I like the new format for the Open that Rob tried, despite the fact I would have finished 2nd in the old format instead of 5th/8th in the new format since I won my first five matches before putting up a double-bogey. I hope the same format is in use next year.

And, I especially liked the fact that clocks were REQUIRED in the major events including Masters, Open and Open Doubles. This is the way it should be. Delays were minimal throughout the event, except possibly toward the end on Sunday and then only because Sean Garber was in all the finals, and you just can't worry about that except to give Sean his congrats!

I typically only play a few ABTs a year, and from now on Clocks REQUIRED, not just preferred, will be a major factor as to which events I attend.
