Championship Flight

GammonVillage correspondent Stick reports from Day 6 of the 2010 World Championships of Backgammon, being held at the Fairmont Hotel in Monte Carlo, Monaco from July 11 to July 20.

MONTE CARLO, Monaco - So Monte Carlo has wrapped up its 35th year and crowned another Danish champion. Come finals time I once again found myself in that room off to the side of the main playing room to record the match. It would be nice if one of these years I was playing instead of recording but having still not won a single match in the main after 2 years, 0-2, I won't get ahead of myself. Last year I watched two Giants of backgammon collide and expected some great backgammon to be played and I wasn't disappointed. This year the finals was to be between two unknowns to me, except for what I had already seen at the tournament itself. Ricardo Malas of Spain and Lars Bentzon of Denmark were to square off in the 25 point marathon.

I don't think it's realistic to continuously update the consolation brackets and the last chance along with the main bracket. It's a lot of work to do esp. when the person covering the event is playing in the event. Even keeping up with the minimum coverage I am able to give deprives me of sleep and knocks me out of whack a bit.

It could be done by the tournament itself but not by someone who is covering the main, taking pictures, writing daily reports ... and I'm sure Gammonvillage wants to provide you with the best they can but they have to have a budget limit for this kind of stuff.

Ideally I agree with you, the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS should be covered a looooooot more thoroughly than they are but that's a rant on my part for another day.
