Adam Bennett reports on the American Backgammon Tour (ABT) 1,000 Islands Tournament, held from July 31 through August 1, 2010 in Alexandria Bay, New York.
The 1,000 Islands ABT tournament, held July 31 through August 1, 2010, is one of the oldest events on the American backgammon scene. It also has perhaps the most interesting history. The tournament dates from the 1970s--nobody seems sure exactly what year it started. Renee Rosenbloom, the current director of the tournament, first played 1,000 Islands in 1976, when the director was a young chap who called himself Barry Freed. Barry directed the tournament for another few years, during which time he also coordinated an environmental campaign to save the St. Lawrence River, and he annoyed the locals, who were uncomfortable with this brash California chap who had shown up out of nowhere.
