Mary Hickey reports on the 2010 Florida State Championships held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on August 19 through August 22, 2010.
The Florida State Backgammon Championships were held last weekend at the Andrews Avenue Marriott in Fort Lauderdale.
The weather co-operated for this tournament, mostly hot as you would expect, with a spot of rain here and there to cool things a bit. Nothing like the drama of 2008, where the tourney concluded with a mad race to the airport to get out of town before Hurricane Fay arrived to shut everything down.
Chiva Tafazzoli now directs this tournament, capably assisted by former director Elayne Feinstein and his perennial sidekick Rob Maier.

Mary, thanks for your usual informative and entertaining tournament report.
What kind of a format does a 3-day main event have that can put a player "out of the action" after a single match on Friday? Will this same format be used in Towson in October?
At the risk of having a conversation with myself, maybe you mean they were out of Friday's action after a single match and had to wait for Saturday for their next match in the Main event?
Hi Barry,
The Consolation for the main event didn't begin till Saturday, which meant that anyone who lost their first-round match on Friday was out of action in the ABT events until the next day.
The Consolation draw was made by having the later-round losers play against one another in a bracket advanced a step further along than the one for the early-round losers. Not quite the same thing as a progressive consolation, but similar in effect because it rewarded getting further in the main. It differed in that later round losers were never paired right away vs. anyone who had lost in the first round, as could happen if they were fed into a progressive drawsheet and played their first Conso match against the winner of two first-round losers.
I don't know what format will be used for Towson...will let you know if I find out before you do.
Mary H.
