What does backgammon mean to you?
Backgammon means several things. First, of course, it is an intellectual challenge to find the best plays. However there is much more to the game.
The excitement of the dice rolls and the luck of the game make it much
more fun than a pure skill game such as chess. The gambling aspect is
important too, as are the psychological factors. All these things go into making backgammon one of the most interesting games.
When did you start playing backgammon and what would you say was the major turning point for you in becoming the respected player that you are today?
I started playing backgammon in the early 1970's. Probably the major
turning point was in 1977 when I won a backgammon contest and got a free trip to the world championships in Monte Carlo. I made it to the
quarter-finals, and met several people who have remained good friends
