In a past column, "Cube Vigorish in Money Play," we quantified the value from using the doubling cube, and applied that to understanding some take/pass decisions in money play. In this column, we'll continue to look at cube vigorish, but the application will be to a checker play decision in a match.

An interesting position was sent to me recently by Sondre Rike. I think the majority of backgammon players would quickly make one play, and at most match scores that play would be right. However, rollouts favor a surprising play which can be understood through its effect on the cube vigorish.
