Most backgammon players do a pretty good job of bearing off their checkers, but bearing in after contact has been broken still causes problems at all levels. I often see the less experienced give up substantial equity in very simple racing positions, usually by rushing checkers into the home board with no concern for the bear-off distribution that they are creating. At some point they heard that "You can't take them off until you get them in!" and they just never bothered to consider whether that might not be the whole story. Experts make mistakes too, sometimes significant mistakes.
