Bart Brooks' recent column about a game he watched years ago between Walter Cooke and a nameless gambler focused on a seldom discussed area of backgammon: the settlement. Danny Kleinman often wrote about settlements, but his approach was on a case-by-case basis rather than treating them as a strategic aspect of money play. I have two stories about settlements. (Really I have many more, but two is all I am going to tell you right now, so plan your evening accordingly.)

Years ago, after making a horrible settlement, you told me never to settle unless I was sure it was a fair settlement...otherwise, just roll. Best advice on the subject I ever got. Phil Simborg
