By Walter Trice: Holding backgammon game positions often lead to races in which standard cube action formulas fail. This month's column shows how to estimate effective pip counts in such positions and use the results to make better cube decisions.

Post-Holding Backgammon Game Races
by Walter Trice
15 April 2008 Back to TACTICS AND THEORY

Holding games often give rise to racing positions that are difficult to evaluate. Before contact ends both players may be forced to bury checkers to avoid leaving a shot. If the defender's anchor is in his opponent's home board it will leave a wastage-inducing hole behind when it goes. One or more of the defender's checkers will still be in the outfield, and the other side may also have not finished bearing in, so the positions that arise are not in the common bearoff databases.

Several of my recent columns have mentioned useful facts about effective pip counts in these positions. In Problem 1 you should be able to estimate epcs for both sides based on material from these articles.
