In backgammon, when 94% of your opponent's checkers get by you, you can still have a commanding advantage, or decent winning chances even with only one obstacle in front of your opponent's last straggler. In this column, we will look at the probability of hitting when both sides have only one checker in contact.

In a future column, we will look at a single checker opposed by a point or two blots.
