Current Ladder: Championship Flight

GammonVillage correspondent Achim Mueller reports from the 2008 World Championships of Backgammon, being held at the Fairmont Hotel in Monte Carlo, Monaco from July 6 to July 13.

Please join us in welcoming Achim and wishing him luck, as he is not just reporting on the event, he is also competing for the Championship. Good luck Achim!

MONTE CARLO, Monaco - In earlier years, the World Backgammon Championships began with a welcome cocktail on opening Monday. Then came the start of the tournament on Tuesday, the Super Jackpot and Gala Dinner on Wednesday, the 1st Consolation on Thursday, the 2nd Consolation on Friday, and the Last Chance on Saturday. The 2008 Tournament should follow the same procedure as every year, one would think.

However, a lot has changed in 2008.

Changes are not always for the better it seems. Numbers going down once again prove it. What´s the point of havinf a "World Championship" if it is unaffordable to the "world" but only to a very few? In times of bad economy and exppensive Euro currency, one should consider changes not only in the tournament format (thank god, that changed at least), but also in the venue (Monte-Carlo in July is horribly expensive) and the entry fees. The flagship of backgammon which is supposed to be the World Championship should be able to attract many more players, new faces and tomorrow´s shooting stars instead of yesterday´s names....

I agree with Chiva regarding cost. I would like to see the venue rotate. One year in Europe, one year in Asia, one year in North America..... Like the Olympics. Perhaps sponsors could bid for thetournament and offer additional prize money.

The backgammon community continues to be resistant to change. Are all the matches clocked? I'm sure they're not. It's sad... the game will be dead in 20 years.

Just a quick comment on Chiva's remarks about the world Championship. I used to love coming to Monte Carlo for tournament week - I haven't been for over 10 years, but only because I now have a young family. In future I hope to come back, and I hope it's still in Monte Carlo. There's something about the tournament and the venue which has always attracted me. But I do agree that the format needed to be changed (though I personally liked the day off)and I also agree that the entry/registration fees are prohibitive and discourage a lot of people. As there's a 100% return on the entry fees (I think), why does it matter what level they're set at - do they have to be high to make the tournament special? Reduce all the fees by 25%. And can't a better deal be struck with the hotel? When I last played there, I was able to find a deal - available to all - which undercut the hotel's "special" rate by 30%.

Well, 10 years is quite a lot and many things have changed. Not only prices have doubles up but numbers have been going down by over 50%. One can blame it on poker, on online gaming, on bad economy, on an expesive Euro exchange rate, on all kind of other excuses. I personally blame it mainly on Monte-Carlo World Championship. Being strategically creative and flexible (and that´s what the game of backgammon is all about, you can find solutions to all the excuses mentioned above.
