In Article 1 of this Advanced Angles series, I talked about playing beyond your own level as a method of developing your game. I always enjoy playing the top players in the world as a way of improving my game and testing my ability.
Just last week in Las Vegas, I was lucky enough to draw some of the best players in the world including Nack Ballard, Kit Woolsey, Kent Goulding and 1993 World Champion Peter Jes Thomsen. I drew Peter in the Third Round of the International Cup, a high-entry knockout event that is similar to many blitz tournaments. Eight competitors play single elimination matches until the draw of eight is reduced to one.
