Backgammon players and theorists have been proposing formulas for cube action in racing positions longer than I have been playing the game, but there is still no single formula or method that does the job adequately. The trouble is that everyone persists in trying to find a linear solution, while the reality involves several non-linear factors. The following three positions illustrate one of the quirks of the backgammon bearoff that is generally overlooked.
