When I started playing backgammon roughly 5 years ago now I was taken aback at the lack of opening game theory available. Other games are often compared to backgammon such as chess or poker, and even though in general I hate most comparisons, these other games had thoroughly stressed how important the beginning of a game or a hand is. When I started reading through backgammon book after backgammon book there were mention of reference positions, early game blitzes, or how certain early game positions should be played but there was nothing definitive.
