It seems no matter how much I study, practice and compete I reach positions I don't really understand all that well. This happens at every major backgammon competition and the 2011 Nevada State Backgammon Championship was no different.
Part of the reason I believe this is true is that the competition at these major events is better than my weekly competition and thus they give me more difficult decisions to deal with as I ended up playing Bill Robertie, Alan Grunwald and Carter Mattig during my near week stay at Bally's hotel and casino across Las Vegas Boulevard from the Bellagio and Caesar's Palace.
However when you consider that my weekly competition includes Norm Wiggins, Justin Nunez and Patrick Gibson, that premise might not hold as much water as Norm and Justin were finalists in the Nevada State and Super Jackpot respectively and Patrick Gibson was a semi-finalist in the Nevada State.
