I have always enjoyed going up to San Francisco to visit my backgammon friends from Northern California and since Chiva Tafazzoli brought big time backgammon back to the Bay Area with the holding of the U.S. Open in May of 2010 won by Mary Hickey. Not wanting to rest on his laurels, Chiva has added to the list of tournaments he directs as he has created the "Golden Gate Open".
In addition to the "Golden Gate Open" which had 31 participants and was won by Ralf Jonas, there was also the "Golden Gate Masters Jackpot" where players could enter in the round of eight or play an extra match and begin in the round of sixteen.
In this inaugural event fourteen players chose to play a pre-round to qualify for one of the last eight spots. Only MCG entered in the quarter-finals so the eight player field effectively became a round of 16.
