A little more than ten years ago, I mentioned to Jake Jacobs there should be a "Giants of Backgammon" tournament where players who were voted in as "Giants" would play in an invitational tournament as the supreme contest of skill and will. He liked the idea, but didn't think it would be that easy to get all 32 "Giants" to participate in such an event.
Fast forward a decade and the idea has come to fruition as Rory Pascar, director of the "Chicago Open" has not only come up with the same idea but he promoted it in such a manner as to make the event a reality.
Rory's idea which was a good one was to have the top 16 Giants invited to play in his "Giants" tournament and depending on how many acceptances he received among the top 16, invite the next 16 in sequence of ranking in order to fill a 16 bracket.
When the promotion period was over, Rory had secured, one former "Giant" (Ralf Jonas #25 2007) and one future "Giant", (Mary Hickey #? 2011?) along with "Giants"; #1 Mochy, #2 Falafel, #3 Neil Kazaross, #7 Jacob "Stick" Rice, #9 Michy, #13 Kit Woolsey, #14 Steve Sax, #15 Matt Cohn Geier "MCG", #16 Ray Fogerlund, #18, Ed O'Laughlin, #19 Jake Jacobs, #21 Richard Munitz, #28 Petko Kostadinov and #29 Bob "UBK" Koca.
The format would be single elimination rounds best two out of three nine point matches. All matches would be clocked with players playing legal moves. Each match would have a monitor making sure that everything went smoothly.
