In a past column, we looked at streaks in backgammon such as rolling doubles 5 times in a row. It is also interesting to look at clumps, or clusters of events. For example, in a recent game, I rolled 10 doubles in 24 rolls. That was surprising, but should I expect to see something like that in 1 game in 10, or 1 game in a thousand? In this column, we'll see how to compute the frequency of clumps like this.
