Calculating Last Take positions using match equity tables requires a good memory and a well above average ability to do mental arithmetic. A method is presented, that will enable you to find the correct cube action for Last Takes in a 5 pt match in seconds, without using match equity tables and without even counting shots that bear off the last 2 checkers.
When I first started learning to play backgammon, I read various articles on the use of match equity tables to make correct cube decisions. However, I play most of my backgammon online and when you are playing for money online, you have to play fast.
Because of the necessity to play fast, using match equity tables to calculate Last Take positions was never an option for me. Furthermore, the increasing use of clocks offline puts a cost on using a significant amount of time on mathematical calculations as this time could be used for other decisions.
