Just like last year, I qualified for Patrick Gibson's "Gammon Associates" Tournament of Champions by earning enough master points to earn a spot among the 16 players from our Wednesday club.
However I was too lazy to get out of bed more than four times all last year to attempt to earn master points from the Sunday club so just like last year, I would have to win five matches instead of four to win the tournament. That is because players who qualify at both sites earn a bye into the 2nd round.
Eleven other players found themselves in the same spot having qualified at only one site and those included some fine players such as 1989 World Backgammon Champion Joe Russell, #8 on the all-time ABT points list Bob Glass and perennial champion and backgammon author Norm Wiggins.
Among those having qualified at both sites were 2007 Michigan and 2010 Nevada State Champion Patrick Gibson as well as back to back Las Vegas Super Jackpot Finalist Justin Nunez. They would join 2011 Gammon Associates "Player of the Year" Frank Ley in the race for the crown.
