In the beginning the universe was a dark and shapeless void. Then Stu Katz spoke, saying: "There is a guy in Germany looking for you." The next thing I knew, I had agreed "let there be internet," and things took shape.
It was well over a decade before I had any direct communication with "the guy in Germany." He was looking for tips on Korea, when he first posted messages on rec.games.backgammon searching for me, and by the time I acquired an internet account others had relayed to him my advice on what to do while in Korea. But in the summer of 2007 I was playing in Monte Carlo, and my opponent turned out to be "the guy from Germany."
Six and a half years passed, and we met up again, this time in Thailand. Everyone eventually makes it to Pattaya. Jürgen Orlowski didn't just make it to Pattaya: he directed the tournament.
