Readers who missed last month may benefit from a quick recap.

In 1998 I went to Dallas to play in the world's greatest tournament, the World Cup.

After being bumped I had to settle for trying for a repeat win one of the runner up world's best events, the US Open.

In the semifinals I drew Jerry Grandell, possibly the world's best player.

Defeating him would be very sweet, and after the first game I led 2 – 0 to 23.

Black (Jake) lead 2-0 to 23

Not a good double. Jerry has a double anchor and a solid position on his side of the board. But it isn't a blunder. XG makes it a 4% error.

I erred here. The best play is 14/2, 10/6, but I chose 14/10, 13/9(2), 8/4. That blocks fives for this roll, but he can play fives for one or two rolls without discomfort. My position is the one lacking flexibility after my play.
